Conversations in Groups that you have organised
If you have organised the group the following checklist may be helpful.
Before participants arrive:
- Make sure the environment is friendly and inviting
- Arrange seating
- Organise refreshments if you are providing them
- Name tags may be useful if people don’t know each other
- Butcher’s paper and some A4 paper to record ideas
When participants arrive:
- Be available to welcome people
- Point out name tags and facilities available
- Start on time
What to do after you say Hello:
- Welcome everyone as a group- give a brief introduction to the Respect for Seniors campaign
- Describe a Respectful Conversation
- Ask people to briefly introduce themselves if they don’t already know each other
What Next?
- Depending on the number of people in the group ask them to move into pairs or small groups and consider the examples provided
- If time permits, consider each set of examples and the scenarios provided. However, at least aim to consider the question: What does Respect mean for me?
- If the group is happy to contribute to the website provide writing materials to record ideas generated in the discussions. Butcher’s paper is very useful for groups
Closing the Group:
- Leave time to acknowledge the respectful experience of the group
- Ask for comments from the group
- If your group is interested in continuing the discussion organise another time with them
- Hand out the flyers with the website so that the participants can continue to contribute if they wish
Invite anyone who is interested in becoming involved in the campaign to provide their contact details and we will send them an information package.
